Finvara and Oonaugh

So a few months ago I read a book about Irish myths. They spent some time talking about Finvara and Oonaugh, the fairy King and Queen of the dead. Such interesting characters stood out and so I created this piece of art, basing the style on the illustrations of Aubrey Beardsley. So, it being high summer and green bean season (The Medieval food of the dead) have a bowl of green beans to salute this ethereal Lord and Lady.

So some time ago there were some posts at this site. It got me thinking about the fun idea of designing a pokemon based on me. So I did this, unfortunately it sat fro quite some time before I finally scanned it and then some time longer before I finally got it ready to post on-line. But here they are, Scrounge and Forage! This was a fun project to do and I recommend it as an exercise for anyone trying to just make something fun.

Dangerous Folk

So if you were to look through my sketchbook you'd see that around February-late May I was sketching folks from the 1920s. This was all sketch work for a project not yet finished. Another game idea but I'll have to get Baron's of Tea off my plate first, that's job 1. Anyway as I was sketching I came up with this finished piece. I rather liked i and figured I'd finally post it! Folks from the 1920s are fun to draw. Also they were crazy, pole-sitting, non-stop multi-day dance-a-thons? Oh what people did before television, the radio and the internet!

Hello all, I'm dusting off the blog again. (A semi-annual task at this point!)
Today was a snow day for me. It's really coming down in Lancaster. I was able to use this time to get a project off of my plate. It's been a work in progress for months, with the sketches in my sketchbook since April. Some of you may know that I am developing a board game featuring tea trading. At long last I finished the box art for it. So that said, would you be intrigued if you saw this on a shelf?

Stare Off!

Hi Everyone,

In December of 2008 I posted an image that was the first of a set of Children's book illustrations. the problem was, I got kind of stuck after that, I didn't know which way to go with it. With getting married and all of the adjustments that and moving to a new place can bring in early 09 I didn't take much time to sit down to think it through either. I should note, this work is pro bono, it's a project I value and a project I want to do well. Fast forward a year, I sit down and start working on it again and this time make progress at last! I had worked on various illustrations for it through 09 but just had a difficult time making anything that worked. I think much of it revolved around the main female character, I was having difficulty designing a character that worked. Since December I have determined which illustrations still need to be made and that's a good feeling. I've been making progress, but with a full-time job and other projects on my plate as well, that progress comes slowly. But here is an image I finished recently for your viewing pleasure!

It's funny, I'm not really one who puts much stock in 'the muse'. I know that to be a good illustrator you've sometimes got to drum up the energy to make good illustrations even when you're not completely in the zone. But this book project has been special to me and the time to sit and mull over the project has been time well spent. I hope that the yield is worth the long wait!

So here's my Illustration Friday submission for the week. The theme was 'ripple' and the illustrations made can be purchased from the artists as an effort to raise money for the oil spill cleanup. The image is my take on the Japanese creation story, wherein Izanagi and Izanami formed the islands of Japan when water dripped off of their spear into the ocean. So perhaps it's a bit of an abstract connection to the oil spill, but even in a seemingly dead ocean of oil life still exists.

an exercise in illustration

Hello all, two posts in two days, what a notion! I've made yet another image, shaped around the same concept that drove the illustration in my previous post seen here. This time I tried the illustration in the collage style which I've been doing off and on since 2007. For these illustrations I head to my collection of books, older than 100 years, for images, and then I repurpose them, cut them up, reassemble them, and altogether alter them so that they work as I'd like them to. The concept, once again, is an article about canning. I think some of the concept may be lost in the digital collage-styled image, however, I think it makes up for it with visual and textural interest. What do you, the readers think? Should I pour more effort into the cartoon or the collage style?

Canned Summer

So here we are, in winter, and my wife and I are digging into our stash of wonderful stored foods. Sometimes there's nothing like a peach smoothie in the middle of the winter, to brighten your day! This illustration was self-initiated. I thought about the blogs I enjoy reading and imagined an article about the growing popularity of canning. I'm not sure I should really say more about it, as I feel that it's pretty self-explanatory. If you do have any questions just direct them my way, I'd be glad to answer them.

Test Prints!

So this week I have been working on some self promotional mailers. Today I did a test print with the blocks, I'm pleased. I pulled out the yellow as a test color, thinking I'd chose a better color scheme later but to be honest I really like this with the yellowy gray outline.

A good listen each week

So I wanted to mention a podcast I've been listening to for most of this year. It's called Art & Story and a good one for anyone looking for great talk about the creative process. (especially when it comes to making comics). So quite seriously, check them out. These guys also do a great daily podcast, an extreme version if you will. '~' Also worth it's weight in content, as well as a fun fly-on-the wall glimpse into what daily life in the studio can be like!

So check them out over here.

It's the end of the year and as I think back through it, this podcast has kept me thinking and entertained, what a great combination!

Hi everyone!

So I'm finally dusting off this blog and posting some new content. Wow. So an explanation on my absence. I'm still making art, though much of my working time goes into the webcomic I have going over here. This piece sprang up from the comic I have posted there for Thanksgiving. I loved the character so much I started doing sketches to explore him a little more and before I knew it this happened! SO there we go, I'll try to throw up some more work a little more often!

Two new works, exciting news and a reasonable explanation for delays

Hello all,

I see it's been two months to the day since I've posted here. For those who check regularly, sorry for the disappointing sum of posts as of late. It is my hope that this one makes up for it! For those of you don't know, I got married last month! There we go, reasonable explanation yes? It's been a lot of fun and now, on the other side of the wedding I'm actually finding time to work again, which is wonderful. I decided to only focus on the wedding prep/moving to Lancaster the month before. It is wonderful to be back and in our place. In the space between December and now I've managed to make two pieces. I'm not certain if the second is finished yet but it's a start that I'm pleased with thus far. And if that wasn't enough I wanted to take this time to announce my plans to launch a new comic! More details on THAT to follow (and maybe some teasers!)

So I've been working when I can in my free time, on a project for a story my cousin Marlin wrote. This is the first finished piece so far. I am hoping that after the wedding happens and after we have a place to live and find ourselves moved in, I will have a bit more of my time freed up and not tied up with planning for the next month or so.

So it is not very often that I receive a piece of advice that is pretty universal, however lately I have discovered one such thought. It's been a busy past two weeks or so, a trip to Alabama for thanksgiving and work on wedding invitations like it's a second job. But as I prepare people ask me the question that inspired this comic. Hello everyone,

This past week has been a productive one for me. I started work on this puppy. I carved my block last Wednesday, and printed it Sunday afternoon. But I didn't stop there. the image itself is loosely based on a manticore. I started with that in mind and ended up with more of a man-spider. Anyway, it's maniacal and fun---for everyone! the block is printed on some pages from an old shorthand writer's manual. For a long time I've been wanting to create a series of prints, so that I'd actually have some artwork to sell. Its taken me some time and preparation but I think I've finally reached that point! I've opened an Etsy shop, so fresh it still has the fresh Etsy smell! And on it I have listed the print I just made. This color set is available in a limited edition of 15. Well the trip to Ithaca was simply gorgeous. For those of you who have never been there, I highly recommend it. There is so much to do and see. A good city for exploring and also lots of nature and trails and gorges to hike and experience. Definitely a good time! Of course I was not bored on vacation! I got in plenty of time to read some wonderful books, as well as play some fantastic board games. But perhaps what I enjoyed most was taking some time to draw and carve blocks for printing! I figured I'd print when I returned but discovered that I had paper after all, beautiful paper. So I made this:

Not only that, I managed to return home, spend an additional weekend of relaxing and gaming and even some website updating! Be sure to check it out, There's some of my more recent pieces up there now, including this brand new piece which may be one of my favorites.

A good read and a good listen

A little over a month ago I came across mention of a book by Barbara Kingsolver titled Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. You can read a little more about it here The book is about a year her family spent eating their food almost entirely from their land or county. The book is both humorous at parts and incredibly informative. I'm left with a desire to learn the arts of canning and to achieve a greater ability at gardening. I've wanted to raise my own plants for a while and I finally feel like I'm reaching a point in my life where I might be able to do just that, at least on a small scale. This is a book I highly recommend. I went to the bookstore about a month ago and leafed through it. It grabbed me right away and it has been a 15 dollar purchase well spent. It's loaded with tips and seasonal recipes, how very exciting!

The second interesting item is an artist to listen to if you find yourself in the mood for something mellow. Autumn is quickly approaching and with it but before it goes the end of summer brings a few more quiet and gentle evenings. In my opinion the music of Inara George fits well. Her soft serenades and lush musical arrangements by Van Dyke Parks from her newest album just seem to fit the bill. I heard about her through two podcasts I listen to weekly. Hers is an album I definitely want to get sometime soon!

This week brings with it many things to keep me busy! This past month has namely been filled with work for an upcoming joint show with Mackenzie Martin for the Lebanon art walk,which is not happening this month until the 11th, as first friday is a holiday. Hopefully I can get some pictures from the installation/opening. Expect to see them here. In the meantime, I encountered some pretty awesome chiptune websites. The first one is micromusic where you can download lots of sweet tunes. Some days I really get in the mood for chiptune, this site is always a nice to place to head for those moments. And then there was yesterday, when I found the artist Nullsleep Not only is his music worth listening to, with complex and intricate melodies derived from NES and Gameboy sound components, so are his other ventures into creativity, namely his New York ROMSCAPES. Seriously...awesome.

Wooed by the Devil....

So I was going to write up a little post about our new kitten and how it is waterproof. It was climbing onto the kitchen table and, despite copious amounts of water flung via my hand from a mug of water, it remained curious and not even remotely bothered! Clearly this kitten must be genetically engineered. Perhaps we are looking at a new stage of kitten evolution. Even worse than antibiotic-resistant bacteria are waterproof kitties. Seriously, option two would be that the cat is not a physical entity, but merely some sort of astral projection. Either way I WAS going to write that both options mean that the kitten is most likely the vessel for the Antichrist, or, if nothing else, the Antichrist's freak hell cat pet thing. So then I was going to photograph the cat with my camera phone and then photoshop seven-ten other heads onto it. Probably give it red eyes, basically...the works. This of course, would be an accurate image of what the cat will one day become. So I sat Takun down for a photo shoot and just could not bring myself to photoshop it, it's TOO CUTE! Clearly it's Antichristical (yeah I know I made that word up, but use it a few times and you'll want it to be a real word too) kitten, it even causes my snarky photoshoping abilities and desires to turn to butter before it. So just um, watch out. I'll be watching for when it grow that second head, THEN we'll see if it's too cute to photoshop then! Meh.

Hello everyone! What a busy past month it has been! Exciting things are underway, in many areas of my life, including working on planning for a wedding in January! I did the designs for our cards and they look pretty great, though now we have to cut them all out. '~' Ah but let's see, in the realm of art I know I want to illustrate children's books and I've been working on some projects lately that aren't computer based. Though I know what I am doing there, I just feel like there is something to doing it all by hand. I completed this piece a little while ago but am very, very pleased by the turn out. Right now I'm sketching and trying to work on what comes next. The idea will come, I just need to plug away at it for a while.

Here are two recent ideas I've been playing around with, any feedback on them would be great. One is made completely from screenshots, the other from screen capture images on my computer... This is a watercolor and a gouache I did this past week. The bonus is a sneak peak from the tale of Belastor Brieve! Although I plan on changing Belastor's eyes, I think the current eyes and the hair combo make him look like L from Deathnote...

Belastor Brieve, unfortunatly in a poor scan (I was in a hurry to make a dinner date at 5) but that's it. It' a glimpse at the new technique I'd like to try out. (Keep in mind, this is on sketch level, on crappy paper, on a relatively-glossy surface and microns and sharpies don't work the best on said surfaces)

I worked again, (having a week with nothing to do was really quite pleasant) This was the idea I originally came up with for Illustration Friday's weekly word, the word was Pheonix, but I didn't finish it in time, even on a week off deadlines can take you by suprise I suppose...perhaps especially on week off?

So I recieved a set of gouache for Christmas and decided to give it a try. I found a scrap piece of illustration board and whipped this up while Princess Mononoke played on in the background. I must say, I enjoy them considerably more than acrylics...

So I came up with another design for the guys at chewing pencils... I think I cuaght a glimpse of him once, as I passed by a Starbucks, I was too frightened to stop!

So I came across this blog site called "Chewing Pencils" and they came up with a contest. The objective is to create an christmas-themed image, cartoon, illustration, whatever, just so long as it features the word Blog in it. Here's the first of two ideas I came up with, what do you think?
